1. Is there an age requirement for my child to take lessons?
A child is usually started at the age of six. Ideally, a child should be able to sit still and focus for 30 minutes and know his/her alphabet. However, at Starling we offer Pre-K music classes for children ages 3-5 years. These classes include rhythm games, rhythm instruments, singing, and also incorporate basic music theory and piano.
2. Am I supposed to bring my own instrument to lessons?
Yes. Your instrument must be one that you are comfortable with. Each week, you should bring it with you to lessons. (For electric instruments, amplifiers are provided by instructor).
Piano, keyboard, and drums are the only exceptions (drumsticks are required).
3. Is it necessary for me to take lessons for a certain amount of time?
Students may enroll for a long or short period of time, but we encourage a four month commitment as fundamentals can be learned in about a three to six month period on average.
Music is an art that can be studied for a lifetime; the fundamentals can typically be learned in about three to six months, on average.
4. Does any additional material need to be purchased?
Books maybe required by most instructors for their students. Also, some accessories may be required to further the student's education. (e.g., capo, strap, songbooks, videos)
5. Are you taught to read music by the Instructor?
Yes. Some music theory and reading music will be taught to the student. (e.g., sheet music, chord charts, tabulature)
6. Can I change the time of my lesson if my schedule changes?
Once new scheduling options become available, students already enrolled in the program will have first choice. Please let your instructor know if your schedule changes so that an alternate time can be arranged.
7. Is there anything else students can do, such as recitals?
We offer two recitals a year, a Spring Recital and a Christmas Recital, at no added cost to the student. We encourage every student to participate in the recitals, but it is not mandatory. We believe that performing is an excellent way to grow and excel as a musician. We also help to provide other local performance opportunities for our students that are ready.
8. Do I need to start at the very beginning if I already know some basics about my instrument?
No. Upon deciding the student's understanding of a concept, each instructor evaluates him or her. The instructor will then provide a tailored lesson schedule based on the students level.
9. What is the best way to tell whether my child is making progress?
Feel free to ask the instructor anything about their progress, and know that the instructor is willing to give you periodic updates.
10. Is it possible to take more than a 30 minute lesson per week?
Yes, you can take more than 30 minutes a week, if the instructor has time slots open. Make sure to ask the instructor.
